1939 Morelos M de C

This 1939 Cuernavaca is one of the oldest known surviving Mexican motorcycle plates.   The “M de C” represents Municipalidad de Cuernevaca, the steel embossed plate carries the double vertical date, 1939.

Cuernevaca is known to have issued automobile license plates with the same M de C designation in the 1930s.  What we don’t know is whether they were used independent of Morelos state plates, or in conjunction.  Does anyone have any more information or photos about the M de C series plates from the City of Eternal Spring.

2023 Aguascalientes Press Release

New Motorcycle Plates Arrive
Starting in June, the Finance Secretariat will begin the voluntary re-registration of vehicles in Aguascalientes, which includes more than 550,000 units. The new license plates will feature the logo of the State Government for the 2022-2027 term, Alfredo Cervantes García announced.

He indicated that, once the inventory of license plates left by the previous administration, which represented an investment of 40 million pesos, is exhausted, the population will be offered the option of changing their license plates in advance at an approximate cost of 800 pesos, thus avoiding having to wait until 2024.

Furthermore, the SEFI electronic system will soon be ready for the vehicle registration renewal process. Those who choose to make the change will only need to pay their vehicle registration fee in 2024, as they will be able to take advantage of this new system.

He noted that the new motorcycle license plates have been issued since last month, as the goal is to update the state’s motor vehicle registry in order to safeguard security and comply with current regulations from the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation.

Currently, the State Finance Secretariat still has 500 sets of license plates belonging to the previous state administration, but at the same time it has received the new image and the Government is prepared to start this new process at the end of May or the beginning of June.

Alfredo Cervantes urged vehicle owners whose license plates are two or three administrations old to come and replace them. It is known that some of these vehicles have been used to commit crimes, and these cases have been reported to the State Attorney General’s Office.

Finally, he mentioned that the Finance Ministry has a registry of approximately 80,000 vehicles with old license plates and that further investigation is underway to proceed with their deregistration.

2026 CDMX Helmet Plates Proposed

2026 CDMX proposes a new license plate: affixing a plate decal on the rider's helmet. Serioiusly.

In 2026, El Universal featured this breaking story:

Riding a motorcycle in Mexico is, for many, the most practical way to get around the city. It saves time and money. However, it’s also one of the modes of transportation with the highest accident rate.

According to data from the Mexican Association of Transportation and Mobility , 155 motorcyclist deaths were reported in the country between January and September 2025. These figures have reignited the debate on road safety for motorcyclists and potential reforms to the Traffic Regulations.

More rules in the Traffic Regulations for motorcyclists

In recent years, authorities have strengthened measures to reduce accidents and improve motorcycle safety. Some of the most relevant are:

  • Mandatory use of certified helmets for motorcyclists
  • Practical exam application for motorcycle driving license
  • Now, a new proposal has sparked controversy: placing the motorcycle’s license plate on the safety helmet . And this time it wouldn’t be a simple recommendation, but a requirement.

The proposal in Congress: a plate on motorcyclists’ helmets

On February 22, 2026, a bill to amend the Law on Mobility and Road Safety was introduced in the Chamber of Deputies. The proposal stipulates that motorcyclists must wear an official sticker displaying their vehicle’s license plate number affixed to their helmets.

This measure is part of a strategy that seeks to strengthen the identification of motorcyclists in Mexico, especially in cases of:

  • Traffic accidents
  • Robberies
  • Crimes committed on board motorcycles

Although the initiative is still under discussion, it is already generating reactions among the biker community.

This is not the first proposal regarding the use of a helmet plate . Similar initiatives were presented in 2022 and 2024. At the time, they were discussed, but did not come to fruition.

The difference now is that the issue is gaining momentum again in Congress, in a context where the figures for accidents and crimes related to motorcycles continue to be a cause for concern.

Why would it be mandatory to wear the license plate on the helmet?

For many motorcyclists, a helmet is more than just protective gear. It’s also part of their style and identity. There are different designs, colors, and models that reflect each rider’s personality.

However, from the authorities’ point of view, the helmet with a visible license plate would allow:

  • Quickly identify the driver
  • Facilitate investigations in cases of crimes
  • Link vehicle and driver immediately

When would this measure come into effect?

For now, it’s important to clarify that this is not a current law. It’s an initiative currently under legislative discussion.

In the past, measures such as mandatory reflective vests for motorcyclists were also discussed, but not all of them came to fruition. Therefore, it cannot yet be confirmed that a license plate on the helmet will become a permanent requirement.

What is clear is that the conversation about new regulations for motorcyclists in Mexico remains open. And, if the reform moves forward, it will change the way many motorcyclists get around every day.

We will have to pay attention to what Congress decides and, above all, to how this measure would impact the biker community and road safety in the country.

2026 Tamaulipas

Muro Politico, March 31, 2026

Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas.-This Tuesday is the deadline to register motorcycles and comply with the 2026 vehicle renewal, without there being, so far, official confirmation of an extension to the program.

The director of Tax Offices, Marcelo Olán Mendoza, warned that the discount scheme ends today, with costs ranging between 800 and 870 pesos for those seeking to get up to date. The official stressed that the only valid way to complete the process is through the Finance Secretariat, and therefore called on property owners to go to the tax offices.

He insisted that there are no intermediaries or alternative mechanisms, so any action outside the institutional framework could lead to irregularities or fraud to the detriment of taxpayers.

He also recommended taking advantage of the last hours of the program to obtain legal certainty about the units and avoid the increase in debts due to surcharges once the deadline has passed.

Olán Mendoza explained that there is a temporary agreement with the Traffic Department not to penalize motorcyclists for a period of 20 days while they regularize their status. However, he made it clear that this tolerance is temporary and that, once the deadline has passed, vehicle control operations will resume at different points in the state.

The official noted that the motorcycle registry had never been comprehensively updated, so this process seeks to organize the registration and facilitate identification in cases of accidents. He recalled that there is already a permanent decree that requires all new motorcycles to leave the establishment with an invoice and license plates processed through the state government.

2026 SLP Mundial Motocicleta

2026 San Luis Potosi offered a FIFA World Cup placa conmemorativa not just for cars, but also for motorcycles too.

From Vuelo Magazine:

Thanks to the support of Governor Ricardo Gallardo Cardona to bring innovative options and strengthen the identity of the people of San Luis Potosí towards the World Cup, the World Cup license plates for motorcycles have had a great response among the population, who go daily to the tax collection offices to carry out the corresponding procedure.

The head of the Finance Secretariat (Sefin), Ariana García Vidal, invited those interested to come with a valid official identification, vehicle registration card, metal plates and be up to date on vehicle control payments in San Luis Potosí, in addition to having exchanged or replaced plates, promoting without limits more accessible procedures that allow this distinctive sign to have a single recovery cost of 500 pesos.

The positive response from motorcyclists demonstrates the change taking place and the benefits of streamlined and more accessible processes, providing better service at tax collection offices for those seeking to access this new system.
